Evaluation and restoration of concrete structures 3 This course will help students learn how to identify various deterioration mechanisms or damage mechanisms in concrete structures (say, deterioration of metallic reinforcement and cementitious materials). The course will discuss both the scientific aspects and its use while practicing repair works at site. Use of various non-destructive, partially-destructive tools to assess the condition of the structure will be discussed. Also, tips on selecting measurable parameters that are useful in deciding the further repair and maintenance practices will be provided. Following this, practices for typical near-surface repair, corrosion protection, structural strengthening, structural stabilization, etc. will be discussed in detail. At the end of the course students will be able to suggest evaluation and repair/retrofitting methods for extending the service life of concrete structures. Importance for preventive maintenance practices (instead of corrective maintenance practices) will be discussed throughout the coursework.
Finite Elements Numerical Modelling 3 The finite element method is an indispensable tool for engineers in all disciplines. This course introduces students to the fundamental theory of the finite element method as a general tool for numerically solving differential equations for a wide range of engineering problems. Field problems described by the Laplace, and Poisson equations are presented first and all steps of the FE formulation are described. Specific applications in heat transfer and flow in porous media are demonstrated with associated tutorials. The application of the method to elasticity problems is then developed from fundamental principles. Specific classes of problems are then discussed based on abstractions and idealisations of 3D solids, such as plane stress and strain, Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams and Kirchoff and Mindlin-Reissner plates and shells. Time dependent problems and time integraton schemes are presented. Special topics such as multiple constraints, mixed formulations and substructuring are introduced. Finite element formulation for incompressible flow problems is introduced through discretisations of Euler and Navier-Stokes equations.
Advanced Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete 3 The course introduces students to the behavior and design of prestressed concrete structures and provides them the background needed to design various prestressed concrete members. Course topics include an overview of prestressing technology, loss of prestress, axially loaded prestressed members, flexural and shear behavior/design of prestressed members, and deflections. At the end of the course, students are expected to have the ability to describe the expected behavior of and perform basic design procedures for typical prestressed concrete members.
Earthquake Engineering 3 Earthquake Engineering is a study which talks about how the society and other natural, as well as human-made structures, can be protected from earthquakes by reducing the seismic risk to the acceptable levels. The main aim of the Earthquake Engineering course is to build systems which can withstand seismic impacts. Earthquake Engineering course helps in the analysis and designing of those structures which support the load. It is a sub-branch of civil engineering. Soil Mechanics, Construction Management Processes, Concrete technology, Applied Construction Project Management and Geology are few subjects that are taught during the course.
Structural Dynamics and Realibility 3 Fundamental concepts, theoretical developments, and simulation strategies for the assessment of the reliability of structures with applications in design and performance evaluation of new and existing structures and other engineered systems. to understand the behaviour of structure especially building to various dynamic loads: such as wind, earthquake, machine vibration and ambient vibration
Advance Researches in Civil and Structural Engineering 3 This course will cover types of research methodologies in civil and structural engineering in addition to the steps of conducting scientific research starting with identifying and analyzing research problems, establishing hypotheses in their statistical and non-statistical variations, understanding the tools and methods for collecting data and information and their psychometric properties and explanation of variables and their types in addition to other matter related to conducting scientific research.
Seminar 0 The student will select under the supervion of faculty member, a topic in which the student writes a report including literature review

Analysis and Design of Shell Structures 3 Learning the structural system, design of continuous shell, latticed shell, tension structures and theories which express the structural caharacteristics
Advanced Structural Analysis 3 Deals with advanced techniques for the analysis of determinate and indeterminate structures, including energy-based methods, moment distribution method with joint translation, influence lines, non-prismatic members. Computer analysis based on the stiffness formulation is presented for space frames.
Structural Design Optimisation 3 In this course, the general theory of optimization, concepts and problem statement are presented. Methods for minimization of a function of one or n variables with and without constraints are discussed.
Advanced Design of Steel Structures 3 Design of tubular members and plate girders; design and analysis for torsional and seismic loads; general flexural theory; introduction to plastic design, connections; ASD and LRFD design.
Emerging Technologies in Structural Engineering 3 More energy efficient techniques and elements are getting incorporated in structural engineering. For example, systems that can recover energy through heat wheels and occupancy sensors are becoming popular. More and more emphasis is laid on green building to reduce the energy consumption of new projects.
Analysis and Design of Composite Structures 3 A course on the advanced analysis and design of structural elements for students looking towards a career in Structural Engineering. The aim of this course is to extend the understanding of structural behaviour by studying new concepts in the context of design of steel and composite structures. In particular, the course will build on your knowledge in structural steel design to introduce you to detailed design of bolt and weld connections, design of pin connections, and the design and analysis of composite steel-concrete structures at the serviceability and strength limit states.
Computer Methods in Structural and Mathmatical Analysis (Special Topics) 3 Students will learn to master challenges such as those which arise from the use of new resource-conserving materials and advanced composite materials as well as those that arise from the trend towards extremely light load-bearing structures. The development of state-of-the-art lightweight structures, which are subject to dynamic loads such as wind and traffic, will be just one of many expertises that our students possess. The knowledge and use of numerical methods, mechanical principles and the development of software code account for just a fraction of skills that make up our students' repertoire, which enables them to assess the strength and limits of numerical modelling in civil engineering.
Advanced Mechanics of Materials 3 Introduction to continuum mechanics: stress, strain and deformation, constitutive equations. theories of failure. inelastic behavior, torsion of prismatic bars, bending of beams, thick-walled cylinders, thermal effects, impact loading.
3D Spatial Data and Laser Scaning 3
Advanced Topics in Reference Frames and Geodesy 3
